Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya – Another Name for Quality Education

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is a chain of schools that aim at giving quality education to underprivileged rural children. It was an insight of the then Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi.   • Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test: JNVST is the national level entrance test for admission in the prestigious Jawahar Navodaya Vidyala. It is based on Merit. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya draws its students from talented underprivileged children, selected on the basis of this merit test. It was earlier designed, developed and conducted by NCERT but now by the Central Board of Secondary Education. The test is held once every year on an All India basis, at many blocks and district levels. It is an objective-type exam, class neutral and is designed to ensure that rural children are not at disadvantage.
  •  Reservation: The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya give reservation to rural, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and girl students. Admissions in Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya are for children hailing from rural backgrounds, with the provision of 75% seats for rural children. Seats are reserved for children from scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities in proportion to their population in the district but not less than the national average. 1/3rd of the seats are reserved for girl students. 3% of the seats are reserved for disabled children. 
  • Free Education: Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalay gives free education to all talented students from Class VI to XII. These schools are co-educational fully residential type, affiliated to CBSE. Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya offers admissions in Class VI only along with the lateral entry in Class IX & XI. Along with coeducational residential institution, these schools also provide free boarding and lodging, uniforms, textbooks, stationery, to and fro rail/bus fare. Although, students of Classes IX to XII need to pay a nominal fee of Rs. 200/- per month for Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi. For the students belonging to SC, ST, categories, girls, disabled students and children of the families below the poverty line, even this fee is exempt. 
  • Three Language Formula: In all the Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalas the Regional Language is the medium of instruction from Class-VI to VIII. From Class- IX, they switch to English for subjects like Science and Mathematics and Hindi for Humanities subjects. 
  •  National Integration: Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalay aim at developing values of national integration through the inter-regional exchange of students between Hindi and Non-Hindi speaking States. They put in a lot of efforts to promote a better understanding of the unity in diversity and cultural heritage through various activities. 
  • Location: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are located in rural areas all across the nation. The State Government offers cost-free land and rent-free temporary buildings for the setting of each Navodaya Vidyalaya.
