Candidates who qualify the written exam are required to appear for the Viva – Voce or personal interview.
The interview typically lasts about 15 minutes and is conducted by a panel of 4-5 members, often headed by a Colonel-level commanding officer of the Indian Army. It is usually divided into three main parts:
This section is based on the information you provided in your application form.
Questions will focus on:
Introduction: “Tell us about yourself.”
Family Background: Questions about your parents, siblings, and family profession.
Education and Achievements: Your current school, favorite subjects, and special accomplishments in academics, sports, or extracurricular activities.
Interests and Hobbies: You must be prepared to discuss your hobbies in detail.
Hometown/State: History, famous places, demographics, and highlights of your native town or city.
This part tests your awareness of the world around you, especially in a military context.
Questions will cover:
Current Affairs: Major national and international events and latest news developments.
Academics: Basic questions from subjects like History, Geography, and Science at the Class 6th and 7th level.
Defence-Related Issues: Knowledge about the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force), their ranks, and key roles.
This is the most critical part, assessing your suitability for RIMC’s ethos.
Questions and assessment will gauge:
Motivation: “Why do you want to join RIMC?” and “Why do you want to join the Armed Forces?”
Self-Reflection: Your strengths and weaknesses, daily routines, and life values.
Confidence & Communication: Clarity of thought, fluency in expression (primarily in English), body language, and ability to handle pressure.
Dress and Etiquette: Your overall appearance, grooming, and formal conduct.
Candidates who qualify the interview are required to undergo the medical examination
The Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) medical examination is the final and mandatory stage of the selection process. It is conducted at a designated Military Hospital by a Special Medical Board and is designed to ensure the candidate meets the strict physical and medical standards required for future entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Armed Forces.
Only candidates who qualify in both the written examination and the Viva-Voce (interview) are called for the medical examination. A candidate found medically unfit will not be admitted, regardless of their performance in the written and oral tests.
The medical standards for RIMC are broadly in line with the medical fitness criteria for Armed Forces entry, with considerations for the candidate’s age. The examination typically includes checks across the following systems:
Anthropometry: Measurement of Height and Weight. These parameters are checked against age-appropriate standards and charts. Significant deviations (severe underweight or overweight) may be flagged.
Vitals: Checking of Blood Pressure and Pulse.
Deformities: Examination for any major physical or skeletal deformities, particularly those affecting mobility.
This is a very stringent part of the examination, as specific visual acuity and absence of certain conditions are crucial for a career in the defence forces.
Distant and Near Vision: Vision must be within prescribed limits (often corrected to 6/6 in the better eye).
Colour Perception (Colour Blindness): The candidate is tested for the ability to distinguish colours. Inability to distinguish colours is a permanent rejection as per defence standards.
Refractive Errors: Myopia (short-sightedness) or Hypermetropia (long-sightedness) should not exceed specific limits (e.g., Myopia not to exceed minus 1.5D including astigmatism).
Binocular Vision: Assessed to ensure proper depth perception.
Hearing: Hearing ability is tested, and chronic ear infections, perforations of the eardrum, or significant hearing loss beyond acceptable limits can lead to disqualification.
Nasal Septum: Checks for a Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS) or any other chronic nasal obstruction.
Tonsils: Examination for chronically enlarged or infected tonsils.
Dental Points: The candidate must have a sufficient number of healthy teeth (dental points) and be free from multiple untreated cavities or severe gum disease. Poor oral hygiene or extensive dental work needed may require treatment before being declared fit.
The medical board looks for the absence of chronic or debilitating illnesses that could interfere with the rigorous physical and academic schedule at RIMC:
Cardiovascular & Respiratory: Conditions like Asthma, congenital heart disease, or chronic lung issues.
Endocrine: Conditions like Diabetes or thyroid disorders.
Neurological: Conditions such as Epilepsy.
Skin: Examination for severe or chronic skin diseases.
The candidate is examined for a history of past surgeries, including Hernia, Hydrocele, or Piles. These are temporary reasons for unfitness, and the candidate may be asked to get them surgically corrected and reappear for a review board.
Examination for any major bone or joint deformities, flat feet, or knock knees, though some leniency is provided due to the young age of the candidate.
