• History: The Indian Navy that we know today was known as the Royal Indian Navy, founded in 1612 by the East India Company. On January 26, 1950, it was renamed as Indian Navy. The Royal Indian Navy was split between India and Pakistan after independence. India at that time had just 32 vessels along with 11,000 personnel. Today, it has 67,252 active and 75,000 reserve personnel serving under it and has a fleet of 150 ships and submarines and 300 aircraft. 
• Chhatrapati Shivaji: The well-known Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji is called the ‘Father of the Indian Navy’. He built a powerful navy to keep the Konkan coast safe from foreign invaders like Dutch, Portuguese and British and pirates. His naval ports were scattered around Jaigarh, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg and many other coasts. 
• Navy Day: Unlike the Indian Air Force or Army, Indian Navy Day does not commemorate the day it came into existence. The Navy Day is celebrated to remind each and every Indian of the success of Operation Trident. It was an attack on Pakistan’s Karachi Naval Headquarters in the year 1971.
• Ships: The Indian Naval Ship, Vikrant was the very first aircraft carrier in not just India but in whole Asia after World War I. It played a major role in the Bangladesh Liberation War that took place in the year 1971. The first indigenous aircraft carrier building in India will also be named INS Vikrant. INS Vikramaditya is one of the biggest aircraft carriers in the world. It came into service in 2013 and is a 283.5 metres-long modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier. 
• Submarines: INS Arihant is India’s first and world’s only ballistic missile submarine which is built by a country other than the 5 permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. It has a 6,000-tonne vessel and leads the Indian Navy’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. The upcoming submarine of this time is INS Aridhaman. The first-ever submarine that was sent to an expedition to Mt. Everest was that of the Indian Navy’s. On May 18, 2004, the Indian Navy went on this adventure.
