The AFSB stands for the Air Force Selection Board. The main function of this board is to conduct the interviews for Air Force candidates and recommend the deserving candidates further. At times, the Indian Air Force conducts the FTS which stand for the Fast Track Selection exam. It is another way to get into the Indian Air Force. Although, the AFSB interview is the gateway for young candidates to become Air Force officers.

Must Know Points

There are some basic things that a person aspiring to become an Officer in the Air Force of India must know. These points will make you take a lead in the AFSB interview as well.

  • History: The first thing, a person should know about the IAF is that it was established on 8 October 1932. At that time it had only 25 soldiers, out of which 19 were airborne soldiers. The day it was established it kept accepting modernisation and expansion in terms of the strength of man as well as the technology. It is the result of this expansion that today, the IAF is the fourth largest and highly acclaimed strategic Air Force in the world. 33 squadrons are being operated by the IAF now. It has 60 airbases spread all over the country. They are grouped into 7 commands along with 16 airbases, the Western Air Command of the IAF is the largest Air Command.
  • Motto: “Nabha Sparsham Deeptham”, is the motto of the Indian Air Force, which is taken from the eleventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. Its literal meaning is, “Touch the Sky with Glory”. The Indian Air Force aims to overwhelm the enemies with the application of aerospace power to protect the nation, just like Lord Krishna showing his divine form to Arjuna.
  • Awards: The only Param Vir Chakra in the Air Force was awarded to Flying Officer Nirmaljeet Sekhon, who showed extreme valour during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The first woman Air Marshall of Padmavati Bandyopadhyay was awarded the Vishist Seva Medal (VSM) for her bravery in the same war.
  • Garud Commando Force: It is IAF’s special operation unit, consisting of approximately 1500 personnel. Its name, ‘Garuda’ signifies the divine mythical bird in Hindu Mythology. Its major task is the protection of critical installations and Frey take control under the condition of hostilities.
