SSB – Turning Dreams into Reality

Services Selection Board, commonly known as the SSB is a dream that makes the reality of donning the olive uniform come true. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the SSB which is a 5 days long interview process. SSB preparation needs a good strategy and focus. A candidate is screened thoroughly through various tests and activities during the process. The whole SSB army procedure includes two stages of testing: Stage I and Stage II. The interview takes place in the SSB centres designated by the Service Selection Board itself. In this article, we discuss the eligibility criteria set for the SSB army interview.

Eligibility Criteria for SSB

  • Marital Status and Age: The main requirement to apply for the SSB army is marital status. Only unmarried candidates are eligible to apply for the SSB interview. The age criteria for CDS SSB is different. To join the Indian Military Academy, one should be 19 to 24 years old. For the Officers Training Academy (men and women) a candidate must be between 19-25 years of age. To apply for NDA, a candidate must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age. 
  • Educational Qualifications: The educational qualification required for the CDS SSB army is Bachelor’s Degree From a recognised university. For NDA, the required educational qualifications are 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University. 
  • Physical Standards: A candidate must be at least 162.5 cm tall, his weight must be in accordance with the standard age-height-weight ratio chart. Candidates hailing from the North East Region get a minimum of 5 cm relaxation in height. Female candidates applying for the SSB army should be at least 142 cms tall and must weigh 36 kgs at the least.  

Stages of SSB

Only the candidates who manage to qualify the Stage I appear for Stage II. In Stage I of the SSB army interview, Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and Picture Perception & Description Test (PP & DT) takes place. Stage I is a screening test. Candidates in this stage are shortlisted on the basis of combined performance in OIR Test and PP & DT. Stage II of this interview is conducted for four days. Stage II consists of Psychology Tests, Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO Tasks), Interview & Conference.
