- History: The Indian army that we know today, was raised by the British in the 19th Century and was known as the British Indian Army. Two months before the independence of India i.e, in June 1947, there were only 14 Indian officers in the army without any national flag, general or air officer. Today, it stands second in terms of the number of troops in the world, with 1,237,117 active troops and 960,000 reserve troops.
- Awards and Medals: The Indian Army never fails to admire the efforts and valour of its brave soldiers. The wartime gallantry awards given by the President of India are Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra. The peacetime gallantry awards are Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra. The wartime distinguished service medals are Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal and Yudh Seva Medal. Peacetime distinguished service medals are Param Vishisth Seva Medal, Ati Vishisth Seva Medal and Ati Vishisth Seva Medal. Distinguished Sevice and Gallantry Medals awarded to the army personnel is Sena Medal.
- Siachin Glacier: The highest battlefield in the world, i.e, the Siachin Glacier is controlled by the Indian army. The glacier is situated 5000 meters above Mean Sea Level (MSL). The Indian soldiers are known as the best high altitude and mountain warfare soldiers. Special Operation teams from UK, USA and Russia frequently visit the Indian Army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS).
- Bailey Bridge: Located in the Laddakh Valley, the Bailey Bridge is the highest bridge in the world. It was built by the Indian Army in the year 1982. The bridge is located between Dras and Suru rivers, in the beautiful Himalayan Mountains.
- Indian Army Special Forces (PARA SF): This force of the Indian Army roared against terrorism on 29 September 2016, by conducting a surgical strike across the Line of Control in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. The force had killed 80 terrorists in the operation.
- Sepoy Kamal Ram: 19 years old Sepoy Kamal Ram became the youngest Indian to receive the highest award of the United Kingdom, Victoria Cross for his valour in World War II.
