National Defence Academy Selection Process

The National Defence Academy is the pioneer of all the defence exams in India. By cracking this exam, a young boy gets a chance to become an officer in the three wings of the NDA i.e, Army, Navy and Air force and Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC). The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the NDA exam twice a year. There are several stages of the National Defence Academy selection process and in this article, we will discuss them.  Filling out the application form: Candidates who wish to join the National Defence Academy are required to fulfil the eligibility criteria first. A candidate must have been born not earlier than July 2, 2002, and not later than July 1, 2005, to sit for the NDA 1 exam. For NDA 2 exam, candidates must have been born not earlier than January 2, 2002, and not later than January 1, 2006.

The educational qualifications for the NDA exam 2021 are different for each wing of the defence forces. For the Army wing of the NDA, a candidate must have passed Class 12/Higher Secondary or equivalent from a recognised board or university. For the Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy of NDA, a candidate must have passed Class 12/Higher Secondary with Physics and Mathematics.

Release of admit card: The next step of the National Defence Academy selection process is the release of admit card. The admit cards are usually released three weeks prior to the written exam. Candidates can download it using their roll number or registration number.

Written Examination: The NDA exam comprises of two sections, Mathematics and General Ability Test. The exam has a weightage of 900 marks. Candidates who manage to grab minimum qualifying marks in the written exam are called for the NDA SSB interview. 

Declaration of result: NDA results are declared in two phases: written result and final result. The UPSC releases the written exam’s result and based on that the SSB interview candidates are selected. The results are uploaded online in PDF format. The mark-sheets of candidates are released once the final results have been declared. 

SSB Interview: SSB is a five-day-long interview process in which a candidate’s Intelligence and Personality are tested. Many tasks and group discussions are held during this stage of the National Defence Academy selection process. Only the best ones’ are selected at this stage. 

Final Selection: In this stage, the candidates are selected for Army, Navy, Airforce and Naval Academy based on their performance in written as well as in SSB interview. 

Release of Answer Key: The answer keys for the sets of test booklets of both mathematics and general ability test are released once the final selection is done.
