Idea Behind Jawahar Navodaya Schools

The idea behind this great chain was conceived by none other than the visionary Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. National Policy on Education, 1986 made it possible to open Jawahar Navoday Schools in every district of the country. Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti was registered under the Indian Government’s Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, as a society.
These schools aim at the talented and deserving students of the rural and backward children giving them the best education and exposure possible. Admissions in Jawahar Navodaya Schools are conducted through the Jawahar Navodaya Selection Test (JNVST) for Class VI. The medium of instruction in these schools is their respective mother-tongue or regional language till Class VIII and English after that, for Maths and Science, and Hindi for Social Science. Students of the Jawahar Navodaya Schools take the class X and XII examinations under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Infrastructure

The infrastructure norms for these schools are strictly uniform across the country. There have to be adequate classrooms, computer and internet facilities along with the hostel facilities. The hostels and classrooms must not be overcrowded. 30 acres of suitable land free of cost (relaxation to the extent of at least 10 acres on case to case basis) is a must to establish a Jawahar Navodaya School. Along with sufficient space in the building and other infrastructure free of rent for at least three to four years which can easily accommodate 240 students and staff for running the Vidyalaya till the Samiti constructs its new building at the permanent site.

The organisation has a total of eight Regional Offices for the administration of schools under their respective regions. These offices are located in the different states of India. For every school, there is a Vidyalaya Advisory Committee (VAC) and a Vidyalaya Management Committee (VMC) for the general supervision of the school. Both these Committees are chaired by the District Magistrate/ District Collector of the respective District. These are managed by local educationists, public representatives and officials from the district as members.

To keep reaching its goal, the school reserves 75% of seats for students from rural areas. Reservations for SC/ST students is in proportion to their population subject to a minimum of the national average of these categories. 33% of the total seats are reserved for female students.
These schools safeguard the future of each and every student that gets admission there. The Jawahar Navodaya Schools are the best schools for candidates hailing from rural background.
