The Indian Army has successfully completed many operations and difficult tasks to safeguard our nation. Major Operations of Indian Army
Operation Polo:
- The Indian Army played a major role in uniting the princely state of Hyderabad and making the dream of one India complete. This operation took place in 1948 when the Hyderabadi Nizam declined the order of uniting into India. The Indian Army overthrew him and annexed the state into Indian Territory.
Operation Parakram:
- This operation started when the Indian Parliament was attacked on December 13, 2001. Thousands of Indian troops were sent to the Indo-Pak border, which was the first full-scale mobilisation since the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Operation Parakram was the largest military exercise by any Asian country.
Operation Blue Star:
- The Indian Army does not just protect the nation from outsiders but also secures it from the people who harm it on the inside. Operation Blue Star is an example of the same. Carried out from June 1 to June 8, 1984, in Amritsar, when the Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale along with his followers took hostage in the Golden Temple.
Operation Pawan:
- This was the code name given to the operation by the Indian Peace Keeping Force in the year 1987, to control the Jaffna from a radical group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LLTE). In a fierce three weeks long fight the IPKF took control of the Jaffna Peninsula from the radical group. IPKF was supported by the Indian Army tanks, helicopter gunships as well as artillery. The operation was followed by Operation Viraat, Operation Trishul and Operation Checkmate.
Operation Cactus:
- In 1988, Abdullah Luthufi leader of a Maldivian group, along with the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), a Sri Lankan radical group instigated a coup in Male Maldives. The Maldivian President requested help from many countries including India. The Indian Army intervened and the coup was trounced.
