About Rashtriya Military School

Rashtriya Military Schools are category ‘A’ establishment of the Army. The Directorate General of Military Training at IHQ (Integrated Head Quarter) of Ministry of Defence MOD (Army) administers these schools. The Defence Secretary heads these institutions. The Ministry of Defence is the apex body governing these schools. As of date, there are 5 Rashtriya Military Schools in India (Ajmer, Dholpur, Chhail, Belgaum, Bengaluru).

Rashtriya Military School, Chail

Rashtriya Military School Chail (Shimla Hills) is a residential English Medium School functioning under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The Prince of Wales laid the foundation of this school in Feb 1922 and the School started functioning in Sep 1925 at Jalandhar Cantt. In 1952 the School was shifted to Nowgong (MP) and ultimately the school moved to its present location at Chail in 1960. The school is situated at 7500 feet above sea level in the scenic beauty of the Himalayan forests.

Rashtriya Military School, Ajmer

Rashtriya Military School Ajmer is spread over 87 acres of land. It was founded on 15 Nov 1930 as King George’s Royal Indian Military School. The aim of this institution was to take care of the education of wards of defence personnel. The School was renamed Military School in 1966 and its old motto ‘Play the Game’ was changed to ‘Sheelam Param Bhushanam’ which means ‘Character is the highest virtue’. On 25 June 2007, the school got its present name ‘Rashtriya Military School Ajmer’.

Rashtriya Military School, Belgaum

Rashtriya Military School, Belgaum was founded on 30th December 1945 at Belgaum. It was called King George VI Royal Indian Military College at that time. This was the fourth such institution set up in the country. On Republic Day 1950, the School was renamed King George’s Military College. In July 1952, the School was re-organized along the lines of Residential Public Schools. Admissions were open to the wards of Service Officers as well as Civilians. The School is located in Belgaum Cantonment, on the outskirts of Belgaum city, which is one of the fastest-growing cities in northwest Karnataka.

Rashtriya Military School, Bengaluru

King George Royal Indian Military College, Bangalore was established on 1 August 1946 to facilitate the education of the wards of defence personnel. The School was reorganized in September 1952 and was open to the wards of commissioned officers and civilians. The name of the school was shortened to King George’s School. The school motto was ‘Play the Game’. In 1966, The School’s name was altered to ‘Bangalore Military School’. Later in 1969, the school’s motto was changed to “Sheelam Param Bhushanam”. It is a Sanskrit Shloka which means “Character is the highest virtue’. In July 2007 the school was renamed as “Rashtriya Military School” Bangalore.

Rashtriya Military School, Dholpur

Rashtriya Military School, Dholpur is the fifth and the youngest of the five Rashtriya Military Schools in India. It was founded on 16 ]uly 1962. RMS Dholpur is the only Rashtriya Military School raised after the Independence. It is located on the Dholpur – Bari Highway. The School is running in a regal palace donated by the erstwhile Maharaja of Dholpur, Udaybhan Singh. The School Campus is spread over an area of more than 1500 acres of the Royal Estate.
