Indian Army Tradesman Exam Pattern

The Army Tradesman post has two major categories: 

  • General Duties (GD) 
  • Specified Duties (SD)

 The various trades included in the Army tradesman post are Tailor, Painter, Chef, Dresser, Steward, Artisan (WW), Support Staff (ER) and Washerman, House Keeper, Mess Keeper and Syce (looks after horses). The exam for this post is known as the Indian Army Soldier Tradesman examination. The exam takes place four times a year through army rallies and is advertised in employment news and other leading newspapers.

Recruitment Process

The recruitment procedure for the Army Tradesman post consists of:

  • Physical measurements
  • Physical Fitness Test
  • Medical Examination
  • Written Examination

It is important to understand the Army tradesman paper pattern to crack it. Candidates who pass the initial three phases have to appear for the CEE. The written exam is known as the Common Entrance Exam (CEE). The question paper consists of three subjects:

  • General Knowledge
  • General Science 
  • Mathematics

The general knowledge section will carry a total of 20 questions, each question will carry a weightage of 2 marks, making it worth 40 marks. The General Science and Mathematics sections consist of 15 questions each, 2 marks for every right answer making it worth 60 marks in total. This makes the question paper worth 100 marks. 1/2 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. A candidate needs 32 marks to qualify the exam.

Eligibility Criteria

Any interested unmarried Indian and Nepalese citizen who has passed 10th can apply. The age limit for army GD post is 17½-20 Years and SD post is 17½-23 Years. The physical standards for the army tradesman post are determined as per a candidate’s region i.e, Western Himalayan Region, Eastern Himalayan Region, Western Plains Region, Eastern Plains Region, Central Region and Southern Region.

A candidate needs to have a robust physique and sound mental health to get through the medical test for the army tradesman post. The physical fitness test consists of 1 Mile Run, at least 6 Pull-Ups, Balance and 9 Feet Ditch. The 9 feet ditch and balance are qualifying tests and carry no marks.
