How Many Sainik Schools in India? – A Detailed Overview
Sainik Schools are prestigious institutions in India, designed to prepare young students, particularly boys, for a career in the Indian Armed Forces. As of 2024, India has 33 established Sainik Schools, functional under the Ministry of Defence, Govt of India. In 2021, the government announced plans to set up 100 more schools in a phased manner. These additional schools will follow the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, allowing both government and private bodies to contribute to establishing and running these institutions. These schools are termed New Sainik Schools (NSS). Out of these 100, 42 New Sainik Schools are operational now.
Evolution of Sainik Schools
The first Sainik School was established in 1961 in Satara, Maharashtra, under the initiative of then Defence Minister, V.K. Krishna Menon. The idea was to bridge the gap in the entry of students into National Defence Academy (NDA) from various parts of the country. Over time, Sainik Schools gained popularity as grooming grounds for future military officers, and the network expanded across states.
