About Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas

Navodaya Vidyalayas are elite educational institutions in India, that provides quality education to students mainly from rural backgrounds. The Government of India started the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas as per the National Policy of Education (1986). The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti manages and governs these schools. It is an autonomous organization functional under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential, co-educational schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi.  At present, a total number of 661 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are functional across 27 states and 8 Union Territories of India. Admission to these schools is through an entrance test called Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). In this post, we discuss the facilities at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.

Fees at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya

JNVs offer free education to students from classes VI to XII. However, they charge a very nominal fee of Rs. 600 per month from students of classes IX to XII and it is referred to as Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi. This fee is exempt for students belonging to SC/ST categories, girls, and children belonging to families that are living below the poverty line (BPL). The Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi fee for children whose parents are in Government service is Rs. 1500 per month.

The fund collected through the Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi fee is used for:

1. Computer education
2. Services of experts for sports, yoga, etc.
3. Training on cultural activities like classical dance (Bharatnatyam, Kathak, etc.), folk dances, SPIC Macay programs, etc.
4. Safety and security, health care, drinking water, toilets, reading room, etc.
5. Installation of CCTV cameras
6. Providing security personnel for safety
7. Engagement of counselors

Facilities at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya

In addition to the above, the JNVs provide the following facilities to their students at no cost:

1. Education
2. Boarding facilities
3. Lodging facilities
4. Uniform
5. Textbooks
6. Stationery (such as pen, pencil, eraser, scale, geometry box, notebooks, school bag )
7. Daily use items (Bathing Soap, Washing Soap, Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Shoe polish, Hair oil, Washing and ironing of clothes)

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya also bears the following expenditure on students:

1. Travel expenditure of students by III AC in train/AC bus
2. Medical expenditure.
3. CBSE-fee.

1. Safety and security – The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti provide high-class safety and security to students. The Samiti also educates and trains principals and teachers about the importance of safety and security.
2. Healthcare – JNVs take good care of the health of students. Subsequently, each JNV has a full-time nurse on its panel to deal with any emergency. JNV also appoints part-time doctors to visit the school daily.
3. Fire fighting – The JNVs are equipped with adequate fire fighting equipment to deal with any kind of emergency or accidental fire.
