Admissions to Sainik School
Admission to Sainik School is through the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts this examination every year in the month of January. Thousands of young aspirants who wish to be a part of the Indian Armed Forces as Officers and serve the nation appear for this test every year. But only a few can finally make it. Admission of Girls in Sainik School
Earlier, admission to Sainik School was restricted to boys only. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on 75th Independence Day, celebrated on 15th August 2021 announced that Sainik Schools will now be open for girls as well. He got messages from lakhs of girls from across the country expressing their desire to study in Sainik Schools. Hence, the government decided that all such schools across the country would now be open for girls as well. As a pilot project, Sainik School in Mizoram’s Chhingchhip began admitting girls in October 2019.
The intake of female candidates expanded further in 2020, with five more schools — two in Karnataka and one each in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh — turning co-educational by admitting 55 girls.
Now, all 33 Sainik Schools across 24 states and one Union Territory have dropped their only male status. As of 18 July 2023, in all the Sainik Schools across India, 1299 girl candidates are proudly studying and will soon pass out to join the prestigious Indian Armed Forces. This is a proud moment for all of us. Now, girls are marching head to head with boys and studying proudly in Sainik School.
Budget and Infrastructure
With the induction of girls into Sainik Schools, the government has provided Rs 92.48 crore to the Sainik School Society for upgrading the infrastructure. The funds are to be distributed among all the schools as a one-time special grant to create facilities including hostels.
A few more steps taken since girls joined the Sainik School include barbed wire fencing of the upcoming girls’ hostels, separate washrooms, separate medical examination rooms, recruitment of one female physical training instructor cum matron, one female nursing assistant, and two female staffers for housekeeping, maintenance, and installation of CCTVs. Hence, we can say Sainik schools take outstanding care of girls and leave no stone unturned in providing a safe and secure environment for girls.
Eligibility Criteria
Earlier admission to girls was open in class VI only. But from the academic session 2024-25, admission to girls is open in class IX also. The eligibility criteria remain the same as that for boys. For admission in class VI in academic session 2024-25 i.e. January 2024 examination, a candidate must be born between 01 April 2012 to 31 March 2014. For admission in class IX in academic session 2024-25 i.e. January 2024 examination, a candidate must be born between 01 April 2009 to 31 March 2011.
Documents required
Before submitting the online application, candidates must keep the following documents ready.
- Candidate’s photograph in JPG/JPEG format
- Signature of the candidate in JPG/JPEG format
- Candidate’s left-hand thumb impression in JPG/JPEG format
- Date of birth certificate
- Domicile certificate
- Caste/community/category certificate
- Certificate of service (for Defence category-serving) and PPO (Pension Payment Order) for Ex-servicemen, as applicable.
Reservation of Seats for Girls
In Class VI of each Sainik School, 10% of the total vacancies or 10 seats, whichever is more, are reserved for girls. For vacancies in class 9, please refer to the information bulletin released by NTA for the conduct of the AISSEE 2024 examination.
