About Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are a group of institutions that provide quality education to students from rural areas in India. They are run, managed, governed, and administered by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti which is an autonomous society under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. JNVs have classes from VI to XII. They are fully residential schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education. History
The idea of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya was visualized by Sh. Rajeev Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India. The Government of India started the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas as per the National Policy of Education (1986). As a result of it, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act (1860).
Budget
The Ministry of Education provides the budget for education, boarding, and all activities at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. Education at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is free of cost for its students.
Presence
At present, 661 Vidyalayas are functional in 27 States and 08 Union Territories of India, except in the state of Tamil Nadu. The state-wise distribution of JNVs is as follows:

Therefore, the total number of JNVs is 661 (638+20**+3*). Here, ** refers to additional JNVs approved for the Districts having a large concentration of SC/ST population, and * refers to special JNV.
Admissions
Admissions to class VI are taken through an All-India entrance examination known as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). The CBSE designs develop and conduct this examination. 80 most deserving students are selected through JNVST for each Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya . To fill the vacant seats and for optimum utilization of seats, CBSE conducts JNVST for admission to class IX and for lateral admissions also.
Academics and Results at JNV
JNVs have classes from VI to XII. These institutions provide Science, Arts, and Commerce stream to students of classes XI and XII. JNVs are very well known for their academic brilliance. This is due to their merit-based entrance test and excellent environment of study. The schools are now well equipped with smart classes. The schools also organize regular science exhibitions for their students to develop their interest in the field of research and development.
