About the Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. The mission of the Indian Air Force is to conduct aerial warfare during war or conflict. It was officially established on 08 October. Since 1950, the Indian Air Force has been involved in four wars with Pakistan. Other major operations undertaken by the IAF include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus, and Operation Poomalai. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Air Force. Recently, the Government has introduced a new model for recruitment in the Indian Armed Forces known as the Agnipath Scheme or Tour of Duty (ToD). Under this recruitment model, the Indian Air Force released the notification for Agniveer Vayu on 2o June 2022. In this post, we discuss all relevant details about the notification for Agniveer Vayu.
Terms and Conditions in Notification of Agniveer Vayu
- Agniveer Vayu will be enrolled in the Indian Air Force under Air Force Act 1950, for a period of four years. Agniveer Vayu would form a distinct rank in the Indian Air Force, different from any other existing ranks. Indian Air Force is not obliged to retain Agniveer Vayu beyond the engagement period of four years.
- On completion of four years of service, the Indian Air Force will offer an opportunity to Agniveer Vayu to apply for permanent enrolment in the Indian Air Force. Up to 25% of each specific batch of Agniveer Vayu will be enrolled in the regular cadre of IAF.
- Employability: Agniveer Vayu enrolled under this entry is liable to be assigned any duty in organizational interest, at the discretion of the Indian Air Force.
- Training: On being enrolled, Agniveer Vayu will get military training based on the requirement of the Indian Air Force.
- Leave: Grant of leave is subject to the emergency of the Indian Air Force. The following leave may be applicable for Agniveer Vayu during their engagement period:-
- Annual Leave. 30 days per year.
- Sick Leave. Based on medical advice.
Medical, Pay, and Benefits as per Notification of Agniveer Vayu
- Medical and CSD Facilities: For the duration of their engagement period in the Indian Air Force, Agniveer Vayu is entitled to the medical facilities at Service Hospitals as well as CSD provisions.
- Pay, Allowances, and Allied Benefits: Agniveer Vayu enrolled under this Scheme will be paid an Agniveer package of Rs 30,000/- per month with a fixed yearly increment. In addition, Risk and Hardship allowances (as applicable in IAF), Dress, and Travel allowances will be paid.
- Terminal Benefits – Seva Nidhi Package: Agniveer Vayu will get one time ‘Seva Nidhi’ package comprising their monthly contribution along with a matching contribution by the Government on completion of their engagement period, as indicated below:-

Other Terms and Conditions
- Agniveer Vayu doesn’t need to contribute to any Provident Fund of the Government.
- There shall be no entitlement to any gratuity and any kind of pensionary benefits in the case of Agniveer Vayu.
- Insurance, Death, and Disability Compensation: Agniveer Vayu will receive non-contributory life insurance cover of Rs 48 lakhs for the duration of their engagement period as Agniveer Vayu in the Indian Air Force. Provisions contained in the Pension Regulations/Rules for Indian Air Force are not applicable to Agniveer Vayu.
- Agniveer Skill Certificate: At the end of the engagement period, Agniveer Vayu will get a detailed Skill-Set certificate, highlighting the skills and level of competency acquired by the personnel during their engagement period.
- Personnel enrolled under this Scheme will not be eligible for Ex-Servicemen status.
Important Timelines
Online applications for the recruitment of Agniveer Vayu will commence on 24 June 2022 (1000 hours). The last date to apply online is 05 July 2022 (1700 hours). The selection test will start on 24 July 2022.
Eligibility Criteria
Age: To apply as Agniveer Vayu, candidates should be born between 29 December 1999 and 29 June 2005 (both days inclusive).
Educational Qualification:
(a) Science subject: Passed Intermediate/10+2/ Equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics, and English from an Education Board listed as a Council of Boards for School Education (COBSE) member with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English.
(b) Passed Intermediate / 10+2 / Equivalent Examination in any subject approved by Central / State Education Boards listed as a Council of Boards for School Education (COBSE) member with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English.
Candidates who are eligible for the Science Subjects examination are also eligible for the Other than Science subjects examination and have an option to appear in both Science and Other than Science subjects examination in one sitting while filling up the online registration form.
Medical Criteria
(a) Height: Minimum 152.5 cm
(b) Chest: Minimum expansion: 5 cm
(c) Weight: Proportionate to height and age.

The sequence of Examination as per notification of Agniveer Vayu
The recruitment procedure consists of the following stages:
- Online Test: In the first step of the selection process, candidates need to appear in the online examination. For Science subjects, the total duration of the online exam is 60 minutes and consists of questions from English, Physics, and Mathematics. As far as other than Science subjects is concerned, the total duration of the online exam is 45 minutes and consists of questions from English, and RAGA (Reasoning and General Awareness). For Science Subjects & Other Than Science Subjects, the total duration of the online exam is 85 minutes and consists of questions from English, Physics, Mathematics, and RAGA (Reasoning and General Awareness). Candidates get 1 mark for every correct answer. For every wrong answer, 0.25 mark is deducted.
- Physical Fitness Test: Candidates shortlisted after the written examination undergo a physical fitness test which consists of a 1.6 KM run in 6 minutes and 30 seconds and 10 Push-ups, 10 Sit-ups, and 20 Squats within the stipulated time to clear the Physical Fitness Test.
- Adaptability Test- I: All candidates who pass the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will undergo Adaptability Test-I (objective type written test). The objective of this test is to assess the suitability of a candidate for employment in the IAF which involves deployment in varied geographic terrain, weather, and operational conditions.
- Adaptability Test- II: All candidates who pass Adaptability Test-I will undergo Adaptability Test-II. The basic purpose of Adaptability Test-II is to select candidates who can adapt to the environment of the Indian Air Force and are able to adjust to the military way of life.
- Medical Examination: Candidates who clear the Adaptability Test-II shall undergo a medical examination at the designated Medical Boarding Centre (MBC) on a specified date.
