The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the CAPF exam to recruit deserving candidates for the posts of Assistant Commandant (AC), Sub-Inspector, and Constable. In this post, we discuss the CAPF AC Examination Pattern or scheme of examination. The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) consists of seven forces. They are
- Assam Rifles (AR)
- Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
- Border Security Force (BSF)
- Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
- National Security Guard (NSG)
- Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
- Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

CAPF AC Examination Pattern or Scheme
The CAPF Assistant Commandant written examination consists of two papers.
Paper – I: General Ability and Intelligence (250 Marks)
This paper comprises objective-type questions set in both English as well as the Hindi language. The duration of this exam is two hours. 0.33 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. This paper tests the following skills and knowledge of candidates.
- General Mental Ability: The questions are framed to test the logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude or numerical ability, and data interpretation skills of candidates.
- General Science: The questions are set in a way that tests the general awareness, scientific knowledge, and scientific phenomena related to daily observation. It includes new areas of importance like Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Environmental Science.
- Current Events of National and International Importance: The questions are framed to judge a candidates’ awareness of current events of national and international importance. It covers the broad areas of culture, literature, music, arts, governance, sports, societal and developmental issues, industry, business, globalization, and interplay among nations.
- Indian Polity and Economy: The questions aim to test candidates’ knowledge of the political system of the country and the Constitution of India, Social systems and public administration, economic development in India, regional and international security issues, and human rights & its indicators.
- History of India: The questions aim to judge a candidate’s knowledge of Indian History.
- Indian and World Geography: The questions shall cover the physical, social and economic aspects of Indian and World Geography.
Paper-II: General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension (200 Marks)
This paper consists of descriptive questions. The duration of this exam is three hours.
Part‐A – Essay-type questions are long descriptive questions. Candidates need to answer these questions in Hindi or English. The weightage of these questions is 80 marks. These descriptive questions cover the following topics – Modern Indian history especially the freedom struggle, geography, polity and economy, knowledge of security and human rights issues, and analytical ability.
Part‐B – Comprehension, précis writing, other communications/language skills – Candidates need to answer these questions in English only. The weightage of these questions is 120 marks. These questions are from topics like Comprehension passages, précis writing, developing counterarguments, simple grammar, and other aspects of language testing.
